The Refugee Support Group, like other charities involved with refugees and asylum seekers, is facing ever greater pressure as a result of this government’s profoundly illiberal policies. The Home Office’s procedures for deciding whether an asylum seeker has a genuine claim have been subject to heavy criticism by organisations like Amnesty International and the UN High Commission for Refugees. In spite of criticisms they are still widely believed to reject many genuine claims. (One in five of Home Office decisions is rejected on appeal.) Meanwhile the government, by repeatedly talking about ‘abuse’ of our asylum system, persuades public opinion that we, as a nation, are being taken for a ride. The reality is that thousands of asylum claims are rejected which are probably perfectly genuine. Those whose claims are rejected cannot go home, because the reasons why they fled have not changed: they may be imprisoned, tortured, killed. If they refuse to go home they lose access to accommodation, health care, legal aid and protection against exploitation. They may lose their children (who may be taken into care under yet more new government policies). They are a standing reproach to our national principles. Organisations like the Refugee Support Group Devon are constantly reminded of the seriousness of the situation for many asylum seekers and receive constant requests for assistance. You can help by making a donation. If you can make a regular donation – even if only small – it helps us plan ahead. Your money (unlike cash gained by applying for public grants) can be used for emergencies. Even better is a donation with Gift Aid, by which we can recover the income tax you paid on the money. If you're hazy about this, it means that for every £10 you give us we can claim an additional £2.80 (if you're a standard-rate taxpayer) or £5 (if you pay the higher rate), as long as you pay enough in income and/or capital gains tax to cover the deduction.
Thank you
