Volunteering with RSG

“I enjoy the contact and experience with a lot of people from different and interesting backgrounds, with a wide range of needs”

“I gained much satisfaction and knowledge, new friends and new skills”

I meet amazing people. I have never met so many people who possess such dignity, good humour and intelligence”

Refugee Support Group Devon could not exist without volunteers. Volunteers work in all aspects of RSG’s projects: from managing the organisation in the form of trustees to direct work with refugees and asylum seekers and all aspects of administration.

Volunteers do not receive payment for their work, but are able to have necessary expenses refunded. Some volunteers may give 8+ hours per week to RSG; others may give 4 hours per month. Some volunteers help at specific events, for example the annual Refugee Week, others volunteer regularly each week.

RSG particularly welcomes volunteers who are asylum seekers or refugees.

How to volunteer with RSG

RSG aims to recruit volunteers for specific vacancies – these will be advertised through our web site, in our newsletters and occasionally through ECVS and the local newspaper.

Where there are no specific volunteering opportunities, RSG accepts enquiries from individuals. The Project Coordinator will arrange to meet the potential volunteer to discuss their skills and interests and how they may benefit the organisation. RSG welcomes new and creative ideas and volunteering opportunities often arise from volunteers themselves.

If a potential volunteer does not currently match volunteering opportunity, details will be kept on file and the person contacted when vacancies occur.

Application Process

All volunteers are required to complete an application form to become a member of RSG, and to provide references. This process will not commence unless volunteering opportunities are available.

Get to Know RSG

Following successful application and references, all new volunteers will be invited to a half-day ‘get to know RSG’ induction session. More detailed information will be shared regarding asylum and refugees in Devon, RSG, its history and plans, and projects within RSG.

At this session, volunteers must agree to our strict confidentiality policy and agree to the codes and conduct of volunteering as set out in the Volunteer’s Handbook. A volunteer agreement is signed which sets out responsibilities of both RSG and the volunteer.

Support to volunteers

Support is provided to the volunteer by more senior volunteers, the specific activity coordinator or the Project Coordinator. Further training opportunities will be made available to volunteers that are relevant to their volunteering role.
